The photo below was taken whilst I was doing a short section of training last month for the worship team at the Elim church in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. I was using my guitar to illustrate the verse that is abridged into something of a ‘strap-line’ for why we exist as a church.

Before sharing what I’d planned to say, I wanted to find a way to illustrate how the teaching in the ‘law and the prophets’ of the Old Testament hang on Jesus’ two great commandments to…

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbour as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.’ (Matt 22:37-40)

I thought to myself ‘what hangs in two separate points that I could use to illustrate this?’ and then had the sudden realisation that there are two strap buttons on a guitar where the two ends of the strap connect. For the guitar to be held up these need to be securely in place: ‘All the guitar hangs on these two strap buttons.’

Without everything we do as church being underpinned by our desire to ‘Love God and Love People,’ the rest of our activity is meaningless.

May we be a people that, in everything, express love for our God and love for others.
