If you are anything like me, you may be growing ever so slightly tired of certain ‘Christmas songs’ being played over and over again as you walk around the shops or put the radio on! Don’t get me wrong – I am not being scrooge-like and I do enjoy the Christmas festivities. However, I do find the repetitiveness of the playlists a little wearying.
Well there’s one tune that jumps to mind first for me when I think of such songs… ‘Oh I wish it could be Christmas everyday’ by Wizzard (I know, I know – you have just inevitably sung that tune in your head and now it’s stuck there – I am truly sorry).
It’s not just the tune of that song that gets to me – it’s the sentiment too. Even as a child I would respond in my mind by thinking: ‘I’m not sure I would like it to be Christmas every day as it would stop it being special!’
Interestingly, however, a few times in the lead up to December this year, I found myself telling people that I live in the truth of Christmas all the time. Although I was doing so with a semi-joking tone, we can genuinely know the reality of Christmas every day!
The meaning of Christmas is Emmanuel, God with us – the very thing that became real when Christ was born and can be our reality today by His Spirit. “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel (which means, God with us)” (Matt 1:23).
