Yesterday I said a very fond farewell to a much loved and trusted companion of the last 10+ years. My friend Henry has helped me tremendously on an almost daily basis and has come to my rescue on many occasions, helping me clear up after many accidents. Yes, I am talking of my beloved Henry vacuum cleaner. I loved him so much, I had two – one upstairs, one downstairs!
So… why the sad farewell? Well, we have moved everything this week from Louise’s house in London to ours here in Aberystwyth and the simple fact is, Louise’s Dyson vacuum cleaner is apparently better.
Sometimes we have to let go of what is good so we can embrace what is better. Hooray for the fantastic years of Henry’s cleaning companionship but we don’t need both so have agreed to keep the best one.
Perhaps there is something in your life that is good but is keeping you from God’s best. Maybe a ministry, a ‘comfort zone’ or a possession that you are holding onto needs a loving farewell in order to embrace something even better!
So…I used Louise’s vacuum cleaner yesterday, and I have to admit: it is good and I am happy to enjoy the benefits of the upgrade.
May we be able to celebrate what is good, whilst being ready to let go of them when God is ready to give us something better.
“See, I am doing a new thing!” (Isaiah 43:18)
PS. Don’t tell Louise, but I’ve kept Henry in the garage – just for cleaning the car!
