During a walk on Wednesday, I took the unusual decision to lie down on a bench for a while to take a moment just completely stop.
It took me a while but in time I began to put the things on my mind, and other distractions to one side. With my eyes closed, I began to notice sounds around me that I hadn’t previously realised were there.
At first I heard the sound of cars motoring along in the distance but gradually the sounds of nature became more and more prominent. Eventually I tuned in and focused on the sound of one especially pretty bird song.
I was struck by the fact that this bird had been singing the whole time, but I hadn’t heard it at all until I truly stopped, took time, and tuned in.
How often might we miss what God is saying because we don’t stop and listen? He’s always speaking; let’s make sure we tune in.
“Let me hear what God the Lord will speak, for he will speak peace to his people, to his saints; but let them not turn back to folly.” (Psalm 85:8)
