Whatever our political views or opinions on military action, today we share in the opportunity to remember those who have paid the highest price during military conflicts in order for us to live in such relative freedom. Our culture may have its flaws, but we do benefit from the religious and cultural freedom that may not be so, were it not for the willingness of men and women to lay down their lives.
There is, however, an even greater freedom… a freedom that allows those who live without earthly freedom to be truly free. The spiritual freedom that Christ offers us enables to be free from the consequences of sin, free from the weaknesses of our flesh. Furthermore, it makes us victorious over the enemy of our souls. This is freedom that can even enable someone in a prison cell to be free indeed.
This freedom also came at great cost. Jesus Christ laid down His own life and chose to suffer in our place. Today we also remember this great sacrifice.
Lest we forget.
“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” (John 8:36).
